Now that the holidays are behind us, the kids are back in school and we are back in our day to day routine I'd like to give you a couple of quick tips on how to get 2011 off to a great start dentally. Just doing these 3 little things will make a big difference in your dental health.

1- Get Rid Of That Ugly Thing

Not your spouse or your favorite old sweatshirt. I'm talking about your toothbrush. Most people hang on to a toothbrush way too long. Not only do they become loaded with bacteria and other fun things, over time the bristles simply wear out and don't get your teeth clean. The American Dental Association recommends getting a new toothbrush every 3 months, sooner if the bristles begin to fray or flatten out.

2- That Little Plastic Box

What is that thin stuff that comes in a plastic box and can be used to hang pictures, sew on buttons or as emergency shoe laces? It's called dental floss; chances are you don't use it as often as you should. Flossing is the best way to remove plaque, bacteria and food particles from between your teeth, as well as cleaning areas under your gums that can't be reached any other way. Fact is, if you are not flossing every day, there is gross stuff growing in your mouth. Flossing is quick and easy once you know how, if you need help let us know.

3- Brushing Correctly

Most people put a glob of toothpaste on the brush and smear it around their teeth for a few seconds; they don't do a good job of fighting gum disease or tooth decay. Make sure to angle the bristles to clean the space where your tooth and gum meet. Be gentle but thorough, and take your time, 2 minutes at least. If your toothbrush has bristles that are frayed or deformed you are most likely brushing way too hard. If you need help, we will be glad to demonstrate correct brushing technique.

Just spending a few extra minutes each day with a new brush, floss and good technique will keep those dental problems to a minimum.

Let's get 2011 off on the right foot. Thanks for reading.

Dr. Jeff
