Happy almost Earth Day!
Earth Day is this Thursday, April 22. What is Earth Day all about you ask? Well in 1960 Senator Gaylord (not the guy from Meet the Parents) Nelson started a grassroots movement to get environmental issues facing our country, our planet, the recognition it needed and to get the public the education on the subject they so desperately needed. This was a necessary passion of Senator Nelson's, so much so that he went to Washington D.C. to meet with Robert Kennedy and the president to try to inspire political powerhouses to get behind his cause. To make a long and frustrating story short, Senator Nelson succeeded in his mission by officially starting Earth Day by hosting highly publicized and powerfully backed "teach ins" at universities all over the Western United States which resulted in the very first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.
History lesson check! So you're probably asking yourself, "why is this chick going on about Earth Day and what does it remotely have to do with dentistry?" Well, I love my planet and so should you. Duh. Why should you care about what one lowly, yet totally amazing office manager thinks? I don't think you should, unless you want to. I mean, you could leave comments about what a self-righteous jerk I am, telling everyone what they should find important, and blah, blah, blah. But what if Senator Nelson thought that his opinion didn't matter either? Chew on that for a while...get it, chew? Dental humor, never mind.
Anyway, my point being, if no one cares and no one raises the point, nothing gets done. So in support of my planet and others that work so hard for the environment I will blab on and on in cyber space and you will like it! (Sorry, I think I had too much caffeine.) There is nothing wrong with being passionate about something as long as it's not illegal and if it is illegal you're probably a whack job and you most likely should not have unsupervised access to the internet.
I think I have adult on-set ADD...and back to my point. How does all this tie in to dentistry? There are several ways to celebrate Earth Day through dental hygiene. (I realize that I'm a huge nerd, you don't have to remind me.) For example, I have some really amazing products, some water saving and product reusing ideas. Remember that I am endorsing these products because I personally use them and Dr. Jeff does not endorse them yet because he has not tried them. Also remember that if you want us to carry these products in the office you have to put major pressure on Dr. Jeff by requesting them and leaving an obnoxious amount of comments on our blog about the importance of this matter.
So here is a list of environmentally friendly dental products that I think are worthy of your mouth:
This thing is the bomb. It is a toothbrush made out of recycled yogurt cups! The bristles are new so don't freak out, but the handle is 100% recycled. Okay so you know how your dentist is always yapping about getting a new toothbrush every six months? Well at Preserve they have a mail back subscription which means that you can mail your old toothbrush for them to recycle and get a new one every six months.
Jason Sea Fresh Natural Toothpaste
It's yummy and it contains non-toxic ingredients that won't pollute our water ways or your body.
My favorite! Dental Herb Company Tooth & Gum Paste
Same benefits as Jason's but I have to say I like the flavor even more and the consistency. I have not tried any other Dental Herb Co. products but I am completely insane for the paste, I just might marry it.
Don't forget to use a reusable cup for rinsing and TURN OFF THE WATER WHILE YOU'RE BRUSHING! It will save eight gallons of water!
Enjoy your 2010 Earth Day. Make it yours while protecting what's ours. Be passionate about your teeth and the planet people!
